Lists on Lists: Things To Do When You're Feeling Crap

We all have those days when we just are not feeling ourselves. Whether it's because we're sick, we drank last night and are feeling the consequences, our hair isn't doing the thing, or we're just wanting a mopey day of feeling sorry for ourselves. While it is totally fine to have those days; it is also worth trying to bring ourselves out of those moods, or just lift them slightly. Here's my list of suggestions of how to do that;

  • Have a nice shower. In the wise words of The 1975; "Get in the shower if it all goes wrong".

  • Make yourself and someone else a cup of tea. Tea always makes me feel better, and making tea for others even better than that. And what better than to share a cup of tea with someone you care about when you're feeling down?

  • Go for a walk. Get outside and get some fresh air. Cabin fever days are nice and all but fresh air will wake you up and hopefully breathe some life into your crappy mood.

  • Watch old shows from your childhood. My dad always says he knows I'm really stressed when I turn on Nickelodeon and watch cartoons. But seriously; there is something somewhat relaxing about watching the uber colourful and super cheesy cartoons of your younger and simpler years. My personal favourite: Fairly Odd Parents.

  • Plan your week. Organisation is a soothing thing for me, as I've found out it is for others too. It's not easy dealing with life and its demands when you feel down in the dumps, but it may make it easier to have a game plan.

  • Cook a really hearty meal for your family/roommates/significant other/self. Once again with the tea thing; there's so much comfort in a good lasagne, or cottage pie, or something really hearty and traditional.

  • Watch youtube videos. I'm a serious social media sucker, but my true weakness is watching the talk show clips on youtube. Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon, Ellen, James Corden, the likes. They never ever fail to make me laugh, and if the interviews aren't enough; watch the challenges and games. Personal favourites; Lip Sync Battle, Box of Lies, all of Ellens games, and the one when the celeb has to sing a song in a different genre (the name escapes me, sorry).

  • Lie in bed and wallow in your sorrows. Sometimes, it works. I've had days where all I want to do is sit in bed, rewatch Gilmore Girls, eat a box worth of microwave popcorn, drink my body weight in tea, and just mope. And the next day, I wake up feeling a little refreshed for letting myself feel the feels, and not forcing myself to muster up the emotional energy my body clearly doesn't have at the time. Most often the next day I'm super inspired because of some tiny fraction of guilt for doing the bare minimum the previous day.

  • Talk to someone. I know everyone says this but venting helps. And especially if this isn't a once off thing. If you find most of your days are these kinds of days, you may have to talk to someone about there being something more than just an 'off day' going on. And by speaking to people, you'll often find they're having these days too and you won't feel like such a bum. They could even share their ways of getting out of it which could help you!

  • Drink more tea. Maybe add in a rusk or extra milk for that added comfort.
